授業概要 / Course Description
Academic Discussions and Debates are key elements of both academic and political discussion and the key methods of promoting an issue through rational, civilized discourse. This course introduces the key ideas and principles of discussion and shows students how to participate in formal debates by teaching the core structures and strategies of the art. Students will learn to create, support and refute arguments, study the different forms of discussions and participate as teams in direct competitive debate on subjects of topical importance.
アカデミック・ディスカッションとディベートは、学術的な議論と政治的な議論の双方において重要な要素であり、合理的で文明的な言説によって問題を推進するための重要な方法です。このコースでは、ディスカッションの重要な考え方と原則を紹介し、ディベートの中核となる構造と戦略を教えることで、正式なディベートに参加する方法を紹介します。生徒は、議論の作成、サポート、反論を学び、様々な形式のディスカッションを研究し、話題の重要なテーマについてチームとして直接競争的なディベートに参加することができます。
授業は全て英語で行われます。履修する学生は以下の語学力（相当）を必要とします：
GTEC 180以上260未満
TOEFL ITP 430以上505未満
TOEFL iBT 40以上60未満
TOEIC 375以上580未満
IELTS 4.5
英検準２級および2級
CEFR A2-B1
・本科目は、入学時及び２年進級時に受験しているプレースメントテスト（GTECまたはTOEFL ITP）のスコアを利用し、履修者が定員を超過した場合は上記スコア要件に合致していない学生から優先的に削除されます。本科目の受講を希望しており、GTEC受験以降に上記のスコアに相当する語学力を取得した者は、事後抽選日の2日前（土日祝日を除く）までに各種テストの証明書コピーを国際教育支援室まで提出してください。また、スコア要件に合致している学生で定員を超過した場合は、無作為抽選となります。
・上記スコア以上を取得している場合は、ぜひさらなるレベル向上を目指してModule1~8を履修してください。なお履修に困った場合は、国際教育支援室に相談してください。
This class may adopt COIL practice (Collaborative Online International Learning), in which students will connect online with overseas students to work collaboratively to complete a project. COIL aims to provide learning opportunities for the students to gain desirable employability qualities, such as intercultural competency, digital literacy, leadership skills, ect. *For more information about COIL for this course, please directly contact the instructor or ask them at the first class.

Students are expected to read short articles or watch videos, prepare questions and do brief research. (This is very IMPORTANT! If you don't prepare, you can not do discuss and this will hinder your group's work.)

定期試験を行わず、平常試験(小テスト・レポート等)で総合評価する。
There are no fixed examinations. Students will be graded based upon class preparation, assignments, engagement in discussions and performance in debates.
GRADING SYSTEM
25% Class preparation
50% Active participation in discussions and debates
25% In-class or home assignments基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
1) More than 4 absences will result in an automatic failure.
2) Being more than 15 minutes late will count as an absence.
3) Being less than 15 minutes late for 3 times will count as an absence.
4) It is necessary to inform group members beforehand in case of absence.
