授業概要 / Course Description
The use of language appears to be universal in that it makes our daily interaction with others possible. But depending on the languages we use, the ways in which we code our ideas can vary slightly or even greatly. Looking at English and Japanese in comparative terms, we are going to see how their lexical and grammatical items differ. Or putting the relevant expressions in a context, such as the relationships of the conversational participants, we may see similar ways or different ways in which the message is coded into language. The former is related to a semantic analysis of language, and the latter to a pragmatic one. Thus in this course students are expected to get accustomed to some key ideas of semantics and pragmatics while looking at examples from English and Japanese.
授業は全て英語で行われます。履修する学生は以下の語学力（相当）を必要とします：
GTEC 260以上
TOEFL ITP 505以上
TOEFL iBT 60以上
TOEIC 580以上
IELTS 5.0
英検準１級以上
CEFR B1
・本科目は、入学時及び２年進級時に受験しているプレースメントテスト（GTECまたはTOEFL ITP）のスコアを利用し、履修者が定員を超過した場合は上記スコア要件に合致していない学生から優先的に削除されます。本科目の受講を希望しており、GTEC受験以降に上記のスコアに相当する語学力を取得した者は、事後抽選日の2日前（土日祝日を除く）までに各種テストの証明書コピーを国際教育支援室まで提出してください。また、スコア要件に合致している学生で定員を超過した場合は、無作為抽選となります。
・上記スコアを所持していない学生は、先に留学準備スキルアップ科目を修得する等、CEFR B1以上の取得を目指してください。到達目標 / Course Objectives
1. To become familiar with the linguistics frameworks of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and other relevant areas
2. To learn about how to analyze language (e.g., English and Japanese) in terms of syntax, semantics, pragmatics or other relevant concepts.
3. To try to apply the concepts, if possible, to other languages that participants are familiar with

With the understanding of basic technical terms in linguistics, participants' performance in dealing with language data will be assessed in each session. Their presentation on a given topic and final report will also be taken into account in the final evaluation.
