Course Description
This course covers a range of conceptual and practical issues relating to designing, implementing and evaluating social science research projects. With a focus on qualitative approaches to social science research, the course will introduce students to a number of basic skills required in interpreting, evaluating and undertaking social science research. It provides students with an introductory understanding of a range of qualitative analysis methods. In addition, a range of qualitative data collection methodologies will be examined, including interviews, focus groups, unstructured observation and ethnography, participant observation and naturally occurring data collection strategies. The course will provide more detailed coverage and practical workshops on key approaches depending on student interest and experience.
As the course is conducted in a seminar format, and depends on the nature of student projects and research interests, detailed information on the course structure and content is not detailed in this syllabus.
TOEFL ITP 505以上
TOEFL iBT 60以上
TOEIC 580以上
IELTS 5.0
CEFR B1
This class may adopt COIL practice (Collaborative Online International Learning), in which students will connect online with overseas students to work collaboratively to complete a project. COIL aims to provide learning opportunities for the students to gain desirable employability qualities, such as intercultural competency, digital literacy, leadership skills, ect. *For more information about COIL for this course, please directly contact the instructor or ask them at the first class.
本科目は「COIL(Collaborative Online International Learning:海外との協働学習)」を取り入れる場合があります。

The course will be assessed by formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment will be undertaken throughout the term and consist of short practical exercises and group discussions. The full summative assessment will comprise the following requirements.
Research Design Template
(Completion will make you eligible for final course grade)
At the completion of the course you will be required to submit a completed research design template that will be provided at the start of the course. The template is designed to be completed based on either 1) research that you are currently undertaking, 2) have recently completed, or 3) in cases in which students have no practical research experience you will be required to formulate a new research topic. Such research could involve work relating to an independent study, undergraduate project, dissertation, or graduate project.
The recommended word limit for the template is 2,000 words.
Note that course assessment can be negotiated with individual students in the first several sessions to ensure appropriate outcomes based on student level.

Annotated Bibliography 35%
Assessment Policy
Students will be provided with detailed information on assessment including information on how assessment rationale and marking are related to course learning outcomes.

The main goal of the assessment is that students can produce a reasoned account of why a particular research design might be suitable given a particular research question or problem. The second goal is that students can begin to develop a sense of how this might impact on the kind of problem or question that can be investigated. The third goal is that students may be able to utilize some of the materials (or ideas based on them) for research relating to the undertaking of independent studies, undergraduate projects, dissertation proposals, or graduate projects.
Note: While this is provided as a default course assessment, students are free to negotiate an alternative assessment plan with the professor.
