授業概要 / Course Description
The enigmatic warrior culture of Japan, epitomized by the samurai, has long captivated both Japanese and international audiences. Recently, there's been a notable resurgence in interest towards the samurai's ethical code and philosophy, known as Bushido. This course aims to dissect the complex tapestry of samurai culture, often shrouded in a mix of mystique and misconception.
While the samurai are often romanticized as paragons of virtue, some contemporary scholars argue that this view is an oversimplification, labeling them as "valorous butchers" and suggesting that the celebrated notions of samurai morality are exaggerated, if not entirely fabricated. This course will critically examine these contrasting perspectives, acknowledging the cynical viewpoints while also exploring the positive attributes of samurai culture that may still resonate in our modern world.
In an era rife with political scandals, corruption, and social unrest, the quest for moral guidance is more relevant than ever. This course will delve into how reinterpretations of Bushido might serve as a moral compass in today's society, offering insights into virtues like honor, integrity, bravery, sincerity, and self-sacrifice for the greater good.
Through a comprehensive exploration of both historical facts and popular myths, students will gain a nuanced understanding of Japan’s samurai warriors. This course will not only cover the historical timeline and key events but also examine the enduring influence and relevance of samurai culture in a global context, transcending geographical and temporal boundaries.
