授業概要 / Course Description
This course will consider how gender, as a sociological, psychological, and discursive concept is produced and constructed in social contexts and settings. The course will examine the multiform practices by which gender is assigned, negotiated, or contested and is manifest as a ubiquitous element of human social interactions. How gender intersects with a range of other categorizations, discourses, and orientations will be a key focus of the course, with course topics selected as providing an opening for discussion and consideration of how gender may (or may not) be crucial to understandings in particular domains of social inquiry. The course will attempt to consider the study of gender as the doing-of-gender (i.e., gender in situated social practices and interactions) in addition to considerations of gender as conceptual or through ideological perspectives. The course will also attempt to place a focus on gender as manifest in Asian, particularly Japanese, cultural settings. The course will be conducted in a seminar format and is designed to be highly interactive.

・上記スコアを所持していない学生は、先に留学準備スキルアップ科目を修得する等、CEFR B1以上の取得を目指してください。
This class may adopt COIL practice (Collaborative Online International Learning), in which students will connect online with overseas students to work collaboratively to complete a project. COIL aims to provide learning opportunities for the students to gain desirable employability qualities, such as intercultural competency, digital literacy, leadership skills, ect. *For more information about COIL for this course, please directly contact the instructor or ask them at the first class.

On completion of this course you should be able to:
Understand and describe how gender serves as an important organizing concept for a range
of domains of human conduct;
Consider how gender may be influential in a range of applied social settings and contexts;
Give some overview of historical changes in conceptualizations of gender in different societal contexts;
Discuss recent controversies concerning how gender is negotiated and contested in a range of social and political debates;
Begin to relate gender to other categories of human conduct in order to develop more sophisticated understanding of human social interaction;
Have an awareness of key concerns relating to contemporary feminist and related orientations;
Give some account of how gender may be an important consideration in consideration of several specific areas or topics of inquiry;
Begin to critically interpret and evaluate research findings relating to gender and related topics and themes;
Use evidence to support or challenge an argument;
Use a range of resources including textbook materials, primary research papers, and internet based sources;
Demonstrate some degree of intercultural communicative and interactional competence;

These topics may be modified based on student experience and cohort composition, with negotiation with instructor throughout the course. The course will be delivered utilizing a blend of mini-lectures, practical activities, workshops, group discussions and interrupted case studies. In addition, the course delivery will feature elements of enquiry-based learning. Sessions will involve extensive use of audio-visual materials. Students will be expected to undertake work relating to completion of the relevant assessment objectives (See section on Grading Policies). This may involve a range of different activities depending on student interests and projects, more details will be provided throughout the course.

The course will be assessed by formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment will be undertaken throughout the term and consist of short practical exercises and group discussions. Note that this course may feature elements of collaborative online international learning (COIL) that requires you to collaborate with students undertaking coursework at an overseas institution. These students may be enrolled in a course that differs significantly from this course in terms of course discipline and course content. The full summative assessment will comprise the following requirements.
COIL participation and completion of group project (if applicable) (90%)
(Completion will make you eligible for A-S grade)
Sound-bite presentation (10%)
(Completion will make you eligible for B grade)
Note that assessment tasks are not evaluated in terms of percentages (e.g., with each assignment worth a particular percentage of overall final grade), rather the course features task based assessment. Students will be provided with detailed information on assessment including information on how assessment rationale and marking are related to course learning outcomes.
Should you be taking the course as a COIL offering, you will be required to participate in all COIL related activities. This also includes the completion of a COIL based collaborative group project. Should you complete these (participation and group project) you will receive a minimum of a C grade. Depending on the quality of the group project you may be eligible for higher grades.
In addition, the sound-bite presentation requires you to make a brief (3-5 minute) video (using flipgrid) presentation in which you consider an aspect of gender and give an informative or persuasive presentation. You are free to choose any theme or specific topic provided gender has some relevance. The sound-bite will be hosted on flipgrid and will be publicly available to other students. Completion of the sound-bite will make you eligible to obtain a B grade.
Finally, the multimedia production (either group or individual) requires you to produce a multimedia presentation (5-10 minutes duration) that will be hosted using padlet. This presentation will be presented in the last week of semester. The general theme of gender must be made explicit, but you are free to choose the specific topics or concerns. You can produce the presentation as a panel discussion, a documentary, a movie or movie trailer, a website, or in any form that you think can demonstrate your key ideas and concepts to your target audience. In addition, you should aim to produce at least one accompanying document that can be linked to your presentation on padlet (e.g., flyer, information leaflet, webpage giving additional information, summary, discussion questions). Completion of this task will make you eligible for an A or S grade.

Other Comments [IMPORTANT NOTICE!]
・Some sessions of this class will be offered online(LIVE Remote Class style), using zoom as the communication tool. The instructor will announce more information about the online sessions.
・Zoom URL will be notified to the students via KU-LMS (Notification function).
This is a part of KU-EOL program, in which overseas students will also join this class remotely for a few months. (*They will not be taking the course full term.)
・All EOL sessions were online until FY2023, but starting in FY2024, the course format will be to take at least 8 face-to-face sessions in a classroom. Students are required to confirm the classroom location.
・LMS (to be announced in the class) is used as the platform of this course. More details will be notified in the first week class.
・PC is required for the course (not via tablet or smart phone).
・This class will be recorded to be provided to students, who are unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances.
