授業概要 / Course Description
This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge about Japan's engagement in key contemporary issues in international affairs from domestic, regional, and international perspectives. It will examine a range of cross-cutting themes related to foreign policy, international law, political economy, and peace and security. In addition, the course will explore more specific areas of contemporary interest, for example, issues of gender, environment, sustainable development, migration, conflict, and human security. As academic scholarship and associated events are constantly changing, various other relevant topics pertaining to current events will be addressed in the class based on the interests and needs of the students.
Note that the course is delivered online as a LIVE Remote Class using live video conferencing with additional online resources. While the syllabus may make reference to in-class activities, these are conducted entirely online.
Note that this course is also designed to be delivered as a COIL (Collaborative Online Internatonal Learning) offering and will feature collaborative project work undertaken with students attending university in another country.
Participation in the online COIL project will grant an automatic pass for the entire course (higher grades are obtained by completion of additional course related tasks and activities).

定期試験を行わず、平常試験(小テスト・レポート等)で総合評価する。
The course will be assessed by formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment will be undertaken throughout the term and consist of short practical exercises and group discussions. The full summative assessment will comprise meeting the following requirements.
The assessment will comprise three optional tasks. Students can choose their level of engagement (you do not need to complete all tasks to pass the course).
The first is either submitting a brief 5-10 minute reflective video (using Flipgrid) that contains comments and remarks relating to a topic relevant to the course or completing a quiz on that topic through Google Forms. This is to be completed as an individual task. Completion of this task will make the student eligible for a grade of C.
The second task involves the production of a short report. This is a brief written report that gives an overview of a specific topic of relevance to Japan in an area of relevant international affairs. The report can be done as an individual or group project. The report is produced as a magazine article, information pamphlet, or website article (as examples) and not as an academic paper. Completion of this task (in addition to the reflective video or quiz) will make the student eligible for a grade of B.
The third task is a multimedia presentation on a given topic. This is a short (10-15 minutes) presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, poster, panel discussion, documentary, or any other format) that investigates and explores a specific topic of relevance to Japan in an area of relevant concern. This can be done as an individual or group production. Completion of this task (in addition to all other tasks mentioned above) will make the student eligible for A-S grades.
NOTE: If this course is conducted with a COIL component (several weeks of collaboration with students from overseas universities) then participation in the online COIL project will grant an automatic pass for the entire course (higher grades are obtained by completion of the additional course-related tasks and activities).
NOTE: Assessment tasks are not evaluated in terms of percentages (e.g., with each assignment worth a particular percentage of overall final grade), rather the course features task-based assessment. Completion of specific assessment tasks will make relevant final course grades based on completion.基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
Participation and Reflection/Quiz (C 60%)
Short Report (B 10%)
Multimedia Presentation (A-S 30%)
Students will be provided with detailed information on assessment including information on how assessment and marking are rationale and related to course learning outcomes.
