授業概要 / Course Description
This course will explore important aspects of contemporary Japanese society and culture through film. Students will learn to critically evaluate and investigate how Japanese society and culture are portrayed in selected films. Through class discussions, students will look at and analyze films from various points of view. Through this course, we will explore the cultural representation and the ideas of ‘Japaneseness’ in order to understand the construction of national identity in media discourse. All films will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles.
授業は全て英語で行われます。履修する学生は以下の語学力（相当）を必要とします：
GTEC 260以上
TOEFL ITP 505以上
TOEFL iBT 60以上
TOEIC 580以上
IELTS 5.0
英検準１級以上
CEFR B1
・本科目は、入学時及び２年進級時に受験しているプレースメントテスト（GTECまたはTOEFL ITP）のスコアを利用し、履修者が定員を超過した場合は上記スコア要件に合致していない学生から優先的に削除されます。本科目の受講を希望しており、GTEC受験以降に上記のスコアに相当する語学力を取得した者は、事後抽選日の2日前（土日祝日を除く）までに各種テストの証明書コピーを国際教育支援室まで提出してください。また、スコア要件に合致している学生で定員を超過した場合は、無作為抽選となります。
・上記スコアを所持していない学生は、先に留学準備スキルアップ科目を修得する等、CEFR B1以上の取得を目指してください。
This class may adopt COIL practice (Collaborative Online International Learning), in which students will connect online with overseas students to work collaboratively to complete a project. COIL aims to provide learning opportunities for the students to gain desirable employability qualities, such as intercultural competency, digital literacy, leadership skills, ect. *For more information about COIL for this course, please directly contact the instructor or ask them at the first class.

This course aims to develop critical thinking, oral and written communicative skills, and content knowledge of Japanese culture and history based on lectures, discussions, and assessment that involves reflection and critical review of selected fims.

定期試験を行わず、平常試験(小テスト・レポート等)で総合評価する。
Attendance and Participation: 20%
Film Analysis: 80%
The film analysis involves the production of a multimedia review of a student selected topic or theme, and can be undertaken as either an individual or group project.
Participation will be assessed on the basis of session attendance and participation on a review blog where students can discuss the fims viewed throughout the semester.
基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
The criteria will be provided in the class.
Active participation is needed in class. There is a strict attendance policy, and anyone who is late more than 20 minutes will be marked absent. Anyone who does not show up for a presentation or does not hand in assignments in class will receive 0 for those criteria.

This class may integrate COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) to co-learn together with an overseas institution online. Students are expected to work outside of the class lecture hours for groupwork, self-study to view the covered materails (films).
