授業概要 / Course Description
This Japanese Culture and Contemporary Literature course examines contemporary Japanese literature, including works written by Haruki Murakami 村上春樹 and Yoko Tawada 多和田葉子. These two writers spent living abroad and are often referred to as “globally oriented Japanese authors” whose writing styles are considered non-traditional by the Japanese literary establishment. In fact, Murakami himself states that he is an “outcast,” and Tawada seems to identify with “outsiders” whom she portrays in her works. However, at the same time, many Western critics and readers find that Japanese culture is very much a part of their works. By reading stories of these Japanese writers who have strong connections with the Western world, students explore historical and cultural issues that have dominated Japanese society and examines crucial ideas and positions currently shaping Japanese thought—which are viewed from both the inside and outside of Japan.
This course is mainly student-driven, and thus students are expected to actively engage with others in the course and prepare to discuss various topics in class. Since it is a communication intensive course in which students are required to have a series of discussion and deliver group presentations, class attendance and participation are mandatory.
This class may adopt COIL practice (Collaborative Online International Learning), in which students will connect online with overseas students to work collaboratively to complete a project. COIL aims to provide learning opportunities for the students to gain desirable employability qualities, such as intercultural competency, digital literacy, leadership skills, ect.

・本科目は、入学時及び2年進級時に受験しているプレースメントテスト(GTECまたはTOEFL ITP)のスコアを利用し、履修者が定員を超過した場合は上記スコア要件に合致していない学生から優先的に削除されます。本科目の受講を希望しており、GTEC受験以降に上記のスコアに相当する語学力を取得した者は、事後抽選日の2日前(土日祝日を除く)までに各種テストの証明書コピーを国際教育支援室まで提出してください。また、スコア要件に合致している学生で定員を超過した場合は、無作為抽選となります。
・上記スコアを所持していない学生は、先に留学準備スキルアップ科目を修得する等、CEFR B1以上の取得を目指してください。到達目標 / Course Objectives
(1) Students are going to develop an understanding of Japanese culture through reading stories of some of the major contemporary Japanese writers, (2) explore modern and contemporary Japanese thought to enhance students’ understanding of the origin, transformation, and current state of Japanese society, (3) recognize relatively unknown cultural heritage in Japan and critically evaluate commonly held notions of Japanese culture and society, and (4) impart a functional ability to reason well and to improve analytical skills and instincts.

Students are expected to review and work on the assignment before attending the class every week. They should spend approximately 1-1.5 hours studying outside of class (depending on the students' English-language proficiency) in order to prepare for each class lesson.

The expected criteria for each task indicated above will be notified by the instructor in advance throughout the course. Students are expected to attend class regularly and meet all requirements set by the instructor. Those who are absent more than two thirds of total number of classes may not be credited. Students who actively participate in class activities and complete/submit assignments on time will be given a high score. Plagiarism, cheating, or helping others to cheat is strictly forbidden.

Feedback Method A feedback session will be held on the last day of instruction. The instructor will meet students individually and explain to them the results of the final examination and presentation.

Other Comments When a student missed a class because of an illness or unanticipated event, it is student’s responsibility to notify the instructor and provide an explanation.
