THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD IN THE SPRING SEMESTER
This course offers a unique journey into the world of Budo, the revered traditional martial arts of Japan, which remain as the most tangible link to the country's storied samurai heritage. Budo, with its internationally renowned disciplines like Judo and Karate, stands as a testament to Japan's cultural influence worldwide. These martial arts are practiced globally not just for self-defense or as competitive sports but also as avenues for spiritual growth and enlightenment.
Among these arts is Naginata, a lesser-known yet fascinating traditional Japanese martial art with a rich history. The naginata, the art's namesake, is a weapon featuring a wooden shaft ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 meters in length, topped with a curved blade measuring 30 to 60 centimeters. Originally a principal weapon for foot soldiers from the 11th to the 15th centuries and favored by warrior-monks, the art of Naginata evolved significantly. In the peaceful 17th century, it became predominantly a martial art practiced by women, blending elements of combat training with cultural and spiritual refinement.
Today, Naginata stands as both an invigorating sport and a disciplined budo practice, sharing similarities with Kendo but retaining its unique characteristics and techniques.
In this course, students will delve into the intriguing history and practice of Naginata. The curriculum combines theoretical lectures with practical, hands-on training sessions conducted in a gym setting. Each class will begin with an insightful discussion on a pivotal aspect of Naginata, ranging from its historical roots and evolution to its contemporary practice and cultural significance. This will be followed by a practical lesson where students will engage directly with the art form, learning and practicing its fundamental techniques.
To ensure the highest levels of safety and to provide a focused, immersive learning experience, enrollment in this course is limited to 20 participants. This limitation is in place to guarantee personalized instruction and a safe training environment, allowing students to fully engage with and appreciate the depth and beauty of Naginata.

Upon completing this course, students will have achieved a multifaceted understanding of Naginata, encompassing both its rich historical context and its cultural significance. They will be well-versed in the evolution of Naginata, from its origins as a battlefield weapon to its contemporary status as a martial art and cultural practice.
In addition to this theoretical grounding, students will attain practical proficiency in the fundamental techniques of Naginata. They will learn and be able to execute basic stances, strikes, and defensive maneuvers with confidence and skill. This hands-on experience will be complemented by an understanding of the etiquette, discipline, and philosophical principles that underpin the practice of Naginata, such as respect, perseverance, and the pursuit of holistic self improvement.
Furthermore, students will develop an awareness of the role of Naginata in fostering physical fitness, coordination, and mental focus. They will emerge from the course not only equipped with a new set of physical skills but also with an enriched perspective on how traditional martial arts like Naginata contribute to personal development and well-being.授業手法 / Teaching Methods
