THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD IN THE FALL SEMESTER
This course presents an in-depth exploration of Budo, the traditional martial arts and one of the most enduring legacies of samurai culture in contemporary Japan. Recognized globally, disciplines such as Judo and Karate are not only celebrated as Japan's cultural cornerstones but also as significant contributions to the world of martial arts. These practices are adopted by millions worldwide, not just for self-defense or as competitive sports, but also as pathways to spiritual growth and enlightenment.
This course offers students a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the realm of Japanese martial arts, with a specific focus on Kendo. The initial three lectures will take place in a classroom setting, providing a foundational understanding of the historical and philosophical aspects of Kendo. Following this, the course will transition to the gymnasium, where students will engage in hands-on training in Kendo. This practical approach is designed to enrich the learning experience, allowing students to embody the principles they study.
Each session will begin with an insightful lecture on a key aspect of Budo, such as its ethical framework, mental discipline, or historical evolution, followed by a corresponding practical lesson. This structure ensures a comprehensive understanding of both the theory and practice of these martial arts.
Furthermore, if the schedule permits, students will have the rare opportunity to observe an actual grading examination, offering a glimpse into the rigorous standards and evaluation processes in Kendo.
Please note that for safety reasons and to ensure a quality learning experience, enrollment in this course is limited to 25 participants. This limitation guarantees personalized attention and a safer training environment for all students.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have achieved a comprehensive understanding of both the rich history and the intricate cultural nuances of Kendo. They will be well-versed in the historical evolution of this martial art, its philosophical underpinnings, and its significance within the broader context of Japanese culture and the legacy of the samurai.
In addition to this theoretical knowledge, students will also develop practical proficiency in Kendo. They will learn and be able to competently execute fundamental techniques, including basic stances, strikes, and defensive maneuvers. This practical skillset will be underpinned by an appreciation of the etiquette and discipline intrinsic to Kendo practice.
Furthermore, students will gain insights into the mental and spiritual aspects of Kendo, understanding how this martial art fosters qualities such as focus, respect, and perseverance. This holistic approach ensures that students emerge from the course not just with physical skills, but with a deeper appreciation of the values and principles that Kendo embodies.授業手法 / Teaching Methods
