授業概要 / Course Description
This course is aimed at providing tools for improving academic writing skills in Japanese. In addition, students will learn basic principles of academic writing and develop critical reading skills for writing academic papers in students’ areas of interest.
Required Levels: Students must be taking level 4 Japanese language courses or above concurrently with this course. Those who do not meet this requirement may be given a permission to register upon a consultation with the instructor.到達目標 / Course Objectives

・analyze the structure of an article/a paper.
・search for sources (using search engines) for writing a paper.

1st:Course guidance, The examination of the characteristics and functions of sentences in Japanese 1(e.g. Japanese writing style, punctuation marks etc.)
2nd:The examination of the characteristics and functions of sentences in Japanese 2(e.g. adverbs, conjunctions etc.)
3rd:The examination of the characteristics and functions of sentences in Japanese 3(e.g. sentence-end, concord expressions etc.)
4th:The examination of the characteristics and functions of sentences in Japanese 4(e.g. words, phrases, and grammar patterns etc.)
5th:Comprehension Checks of 1st~4th lessons
6th:Structure of a research paper/report and how to formulate statements/arguments
7th:Writing references and works cited/bibliography
8th:Treatment of academic sources
9th:Plagiarism & Writing Literature Review
10th:Writing an abstract

定期試験を行わず、平常試験(小テスト・レポート等)で総合評価する。
Assessment is based upon the following:
・Participation and performance in the class (30%)
・Assignments (40%)
・Final report (30%)
*If attendance is unsatisfactory (i.e., less than 90%), a failing grade may be given. Students must notify the instructors in charge regarding absences and give justification.基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
Assignments and Final report will be evaluated based
on the effective use of language and techniques practiced in class.
Students will be expected to actively participate in class.
