授業概要 / Course Description
The aim of this introductory course is to give students a basic understanding of the broader trends of modern European history. Throughout the course, we will focus on a few important themes – such as the evolution of the modern states and economic systems in Europe – while examining primary and secondary sources in order to understand the political and social foundations that helped shape the world we live in today. We will also look at the current issues and challenges that Europe is facing and debate how they can be overcome. Thus, the students will develop a number of basic skills for historical research and analysis.
There will be reading material for each week. Classes will be a mixture of lectures by the instructor and student presentation followed by class discussion, so students should come prepared to present on their assigned topics and to engage in discussions.

Grading Policy
Presentation (40%), participation in class discussion (30%), and a final essay reflecting on what students have learned in the course (30%).基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
Students should come to class prepared to discuss assigned reading materials. In their discussions and presentations, they should demonstrate knowledge of the important terms and ideas related to European history and culture.
While everyone must read all the assignments, every week one or more students will have to present to the class the paper assigned for the respective week. The presentation (15 min) should include: the main ideas of the paper, its conclusions, and the student’s own evaluation of the paper (it can be positive, negative, or both).
A student’s class participation grade is based on active contributions to class discussions.
The final essay is an individual work and should consist of 1000~1500 words (2~3 pages long). For the final essay, the students must research and express their own views on a topic related to European history. The students can choose a topic of their interest or focus on a topic suggested in the syllabus. The paper is to be 1.5-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. In the bibliography, they are expected to include at least five academic sources.
