授業概要 / Course Description
This will be an exploration of the religious traditions of Japan, their historical development as well as their role in contemporary society. Much attention shall be paid to Shinto, which comes closest to being the “indigenous” Japanese religion, and Buddhism, the global faith that began in India and entered Japan in the 6th century. We will also touch upon the roles of Confucianism, Christianity, and so-called New Religions.
An attempt will be made to cover the social, artistic, philosophical, and doctrinal characteristics of these religions, and thus we will be looking at their artistic and literary expressions as well as reading classic and contemporary texts.
There will be reading material for each week, including classic texts in English translation as well as more recent scholarly articles. Classes will be a mixture of lecture by the instructor and class discussion, so students should come prepared to engage in discussion each week.

・本科目は、入学時及び２年進級時に受験しているプレースメントテスト（GTECまたはTOEFL ITP）のスコアを利用し、履修者が定員を超過した場合は上記スコア要件に合致していない学生から優先的に削除されます。本科目の受講を希望しており、GTEC受験以降に上記のスコアに相当する語学力を取得した者は、事後抽選日の2日前（土日祝日を除く）までに各種テストの証明書コピーを国際教育支援室まで提出してください。また、スコア要件に合致している学生で定員を超過した場合は、無作為抽選となります。
・上記スコアを所持していない学生は、先に留学準備スキルアップ科目を修得する等、CEFR B1以上の取得を目指してください。

At the end of this semester, students should have a firm grasp of the basic history and also the contemporary circumstances surrounding religion in Japan.

We may plan one field trip to visit religious sites.
Students will have readings to complete most weeks, and may each be involved in one group presentation on an assigned theme.

定期試験を行わず、平常試験(小テスト・レポート等)で総合評価する。
Grades will be based upon class participation and short assignments (20%), a Midterm Exam (40%), and a final exam or presentation (40%). Attendance is mandatory.基準・評価 / Evaluation Criteria・Assessment Policy
Students should come to class prepared to discuss assigned reading materials. In their tests and presentations, they should demonstrate a knowledge of the important terms, ideas, and historical events related to religion in Japan, and should be able to make a critical analysis of such ideas and interpretations of them.
